NeSP (Nederlands Symfonie Project) asked me to be their illustrator and graphic designer for their final project: FINALE.
The play that consisted of three parts, with the main play being divided in three, asked for five illustrations and a cover illustration. Every part was the inspiration for each illustration.
The first illustration shows Villa de Borghese, that had been described in the story of the play Pini di Roma, of which the illustration is based. The story of children playing underneath the pine trees reminded me of playing outside as a kid. I wanted to pass on that warm memory to others.
The second illustration came to be because Pianoconcert in G is inspired by the jazz culture. Classical music and jazz seem like a strange combination, but is quite interesting. I tried to catch he collision of these two worlds into this artwork.
For the last three illustrations, I was inspired by the three parts Symphonic Dancing is able to be split into: midday, dusk and midnight. These parts I connected to parts of my life. Midday represents light and peace, while Dusk stands for discovering something new and beautiful, but this causes disturbance of the peacefulness I felt before. And lastly Midnight catches the loneliness I felt, but also the hope that everything will be alright in the end.
I wanted to give these illustrations something extra so decided to add a layer by putting another illustration on top of the original one. I had in mind to get the impression of movement, as if the images where performing a choreography. By blending the illustrations with Photoshop the final results became even more interesting than expected. It only didn't really work for Dusk, which made me decide to just leave this illustration as it was.
As for the cover, NeSP wanted something that symbolized 'Finale'. I had a lot of ideas and tried out a lot of different possibilities and versions. I started with just writing down everything that came to mind with the word 'Finale': confetti, concert, end of a movie, etc. Somehow that bow at the end of a performance just really stuck with me and was what the people from NeSP also were most enthusiastic about.
